Samuel Joseph was born on22nd February, 1899, to Mr.P.J.Devasahayam, Principal, Union High School, Coimbatore and Mrs.Elizabeth Devasahayam, the youngest daughter of Rev.J.Joshua.  His mother died when he was three years old and was brought up by his stepmother.  He was loving by nature and he loved his sister Stella and the stepsisters Felicia and Kamala alike.

He had his school education at Coimbatore and worked as a clerk in the Union High School for some time.  Later he worked as a clerk in an estate in Munnar during which time he earned the friendship of Dr.D.C.Berry the well known musician of Neyyoor.

He married Paulnesam eldest daughter of Mr.& Mrs.John Rose of Tharavilai.  They have three sons and a daughter - Karunakaran, Jeyakaran  Prabhakaran and Ramani. Mrs.Paulnesam Samuel was a devoted mother and spent most of her time attending to household chores and looking after the children.  Reading Bible regularly, everyday, was a habit with her.

She was very affectionate towards her sister-in-law, Stella   whom

she respected very much.  She heartily entertained friends and relatives whenever they visited her.  She loved the children around her as much as she loved her own.  Since the family’s income was modest she had to sacrifice many pleasures in life in order to bring up the children.

J.D.Samuel  came back and  settled  in   NAGERCOIL, when his father retired from service.  He had an obsession for collecting and displaying photographs especially wedding photographs of relatives and family members.  The central Hall in his house “Sunny Dale” used to be almost fully covered with such photographs. He never got tired of going on errands for others, especially for those who had no one to help them.  He was very honest, hardworking and sincere.  He was maintaining the accounts in some establishments in NAGERCOIL which  helped him to keep himself engaged and active.   He was also in the habit of keeping accounts at home and noted down even small items.  He had his ups and downs in his life but faced them patiently.   Till he was confined to his house, during his last years of life, he used to visit close relatives and neighbours.

He passed away on 12th January, 1987.  Six years later Mrs.Paulnesam Samuel passed away on 12th May, 1993.  They were interred in the Home Church Cemetery.
