George Oliver

Mr.George Oliver was born in the year 1914 as the youngest son of Mr.J.Lewis son of Rev.J.Joshua, and Mrs.Maisie Lewis.  He had his early education in theScott Christian High School and in the Scott Christian College, NAGERCOIL.   With the help of his eldest brother-in-law, late Mr.P.N.Malachi, he entered Burma and worked there.  During the World War II he returned to India and joined the Burmah Shell Company at Madras.  Soon he left the job and returned to NAGERCOIL.

He lived his life as a Bachelor.  He was well taken care of by his beloved mother Mrs.Maisie Lewis.  Spending the summer time at Muttom was the favourite pastime of the family.  Descendants of Mr.& Mrs.Lewis followed it every summer and everyone enjoyed the stay there.  Mr.Oliver took it upon himself to arrange for the stay of every family at Muttom and looked after their needs.

Mr.Oliver loved his family members.  On every Christmas day and also on the New Year eve family members gathered at their residence in Munro Street ( the family house of  Rev.J.Joshua ) and shared the joy and fun with Mrs.Maisie Lewis and Mr.Oliver.

A tall, handsome personality his main hobby in life was to collect autographs of V.V.I.P.s.  He spent a lot of his time and money in correspondence for obtaining the autographs.  He had in his collection autographs of Mahatma Gandhi, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, Dr.Rajendra Prasad and many more and also of many foreign dignitaries.

After the death of his mother Mr.Oliver was looked after well by his brothers and sisters.  He died after a brief illness on 4th July 1979 and was interred in the NAGERCOIL Home Church Cemetery.  May his soul rest in Peace.
