The late Mr.J. Lewis was the youngest son of the late Rev.J. Joshua the second Pastor of theNAGERCOIL Home Church.  Rev. Joshua was a forceful and attractive speaker and was popularly known as the ‘Spurgeon of South India.  His life and work were of a high order and Mr. Lewis imbibed the great qualities of his father and put them into practice during his life time.  Mr. Lewis’ mother, Mrs. Paripuranam  Joshua, was a cultured lady from Koilvilai and possessed great qualities of head and heart.  She was a fitting partner to the late Rev. Joshua under whose training Mr. Lewis was brought up in a true Christian atmosphere.  Consequently he developed a lovable disposition and was known to almost all the people in NAGERCOIL as a man of noble qualities.

Mr. Lewis married Ananda Maisie, daughter of the late Mr.P.P.Joseph a rich plantation conductor on 3rd May, 1899.  They were blessed with three sons and three daughters.  Mr.Lewis was a good Christian and brought up his children in a good Christian way.  Family prayers and religious songs were a regular feature in his home.  He was regular in attending Church services and instilled the same habit in all his children.  He was also a leader in Christian activities.  He took great interest in evangelical work and led many a party of Christian young men to rural areas to preach the gospel of Christ.  In addition, he took part, occasionally, in conducting Church services and delivering simple and useful sermons in the Home Church.  In all these tasks he was ably assisted by his wife Mrs.Maisie Lewis.

One of the greatest qualities of Mr. Lewis was his humility.  Always joyful and pleasing, never haughty or overbearing, he moved with friends and foes alike.  It is no exaggeration to say that he had no enemies at any time in his life.

Mr. Lewis was always of a jovial nature and was characterised as a singing ambassador.  He made his home a place of Joy and Happiness.  His initials J and L stand for two of his great qualities, ‘Joy’ and ‘Love’.

He was a good teacher also.  He served in Mission institutions for over three decades and took great delight in bringing up his wards in sound Christian ways and knowledge.  He also took delight in bringing up his children and grand children in the same way.  Mr. Lewis was a Sunday School teacher also and a leader in Christian Enedavour activities.

For a period of about seven years after his retirement, he served the Home Church in the capacity of clerical assistant in which post he showed great integrity and trustworthiness.

In the field of education Mr. Lewis had a unique distinction.  During the time of Mr.J.E.Dennison, principal of the Scott Christian College, the first batch of college students, numbering thirteen, were sent up for the Fellow of Arts Examination and Mr.Lewis was one among them.

Mr. Lewis was born on 10th November,1871, and died on 20th July,1940, at the age of 69.  His mortal remains were interred in the local Home Church cemetery in the presence of a large and distinguished gathering of friends and relatives.  In the funeral oration at his grave side he was described as, an unordained pastor and one in whom was no guile.

May his soul rest in peace.

Life of late Mrs. Maisie Lewis

Born on 2nd March, 1880, Mrs. Maisie Lewis was the daughter of the late Mr.P.P.Joseph a rich plantation conductor and one of the early Christians of South Travancore.  Mr. Joseph was a great figure in the social and religious activities of South Travancore Indian Christian community.  He was also a prominent deacon of the Home Church for about seventeen years and had contributed liberally to the stability of the Church funds.  She got married to Mr. J.Lewis and they had six children.

Mrs. Maisie Lewis was also responsible for the sound upbringing of her children and grand children, along with Mr. Lewis and lived up to the ripe old age of four score and nine years.  During her life time she saw the construction and dedication of the Rev.J.Joshua Memorial Church at Henrypuram, Vadasery, which owes its existence to the persuasive efforts of Mrs. Lewis and the donations given by the descendants of Rev.J.Joshua as well as by the NAGERCOIL Church Ladies Missionary Auxiliary.  She also had the unique blessing of seeing her great-great-grandchildren.

After the death of her husband Mr.J.Lewis on 20th July, 1940, she had to shoulder the full responsibility of guiding the family through many trials and tribulations.  She derived the strength for this through her strong faith in God and untiring daily conversation with Him in Prayers.
