Ranjan Samuel is the only son of Mr.S.J.Karunakaran, a great grand son of Rev.J.Joshua and Mrs.Retnavathy Karunakaran.  He had his schooling in Virudhunagar.  It was in Kshatriya Vidhya Sala of Virudhunagar that he finished his school education.  He did his Pre University Course in V.H.N.S.N. College, Virudhunagar during 1977-78.  He joined B.Sc. Degree  course in Physics in Loyola College, Chennai in 1978, and after one year he joined Annamalai University, from where he took his B.E.Degree in Mechanical(Production) Engineering.

 

Even from his school days Ranjan had a great passion for Basket Ball.  He developed his skill in the game to such a level that when he was studying P.U.C. he was selected to represent Tamil Nadu (Junior) team at the National Basket Ball Championship held at Trichur in November, 1977, and also at the Pre-Asian Youth Basket Ball Championship held at Chandigarh in June, 1978.

 

When he was studying in Loyola College, his team won nine intercollegiate tournaments including the Bertram Tournament.  He represented Annamalai University from 1979 to 1984.  He was a key player in the Anna Transport Corporation Basket Ball team during the year 1985 -86.

 

After graduation in Mechanical Engineering Ranjan Samuel joined Anna Transport Corporation, Salem, as Assistant Engineer.  He left this job when he was selected as Assistant Engineer in Neyveli Lignite Corporation in 1986.  By virtue of his sincere and hard work he rose to the position of Executive Engineer and currently he is working as Deputy Superintending Engineer.

 

He married Mallika the youngest daughter of Mr.D.N.I.Clifford and Mrs.Esther Gnanabai Clifford.  She had her early education in Scott Christian High School, and Duthie High School, NAGERCOIL.  She studied in Avichi High School, Chennai, from Standards eight to eleven and did her P.U.C. in Women’s Christian College, NAGERCOIL.

 

 After doing her B.A.English Literature in Scott Christian College, she took her M.A.Degree in English Literature from V.V.V. College for Women, Virudhunagar.  She represented V.V.V. College in Ball Badminton for two years.

 

She takes active interest in the activities of St.John’s Church, Neyveli, and currently is the Director of the Church Sunday School.

 

Ranjan and Mallika are blessed with a son named Samuel Shalom who was born on 8th June, 1988.  He is studying in Seventh Standard in Jawahar Higher Secondary School, Neyveli.  Even at the age of eleven, he has taken keen interest in Tennis and is undergoing coaching at Neyveli.  In a recently held tournament for under twelve for Neyveli Lignite Corporation School boys he has won the championship trophy.

 

The family is living in the staff quarters of Neyveli Lignite Corporation.
