Major G.Nelson was born on 26th May, 1921, to Mr.Gnanabharanam and Mrs.Nallathangal Gnanabharanam.  His early school and college days were spent atTrivandrum.

            On completion of his studies he joined the Travancore-Cochin forces on 19th January, 1942.  Soon he became a Commissioned Officer - 2nd Lieutenant - in the Forces.  Within a short period he was promoted as Lieutenant and later as Captain on 2nd June, 1948.  He was then transferred to the Madras Regiment of the Armed Services and retiree as Major on 15th November, 1968.  During the Military Service he has undergone many training courses.

           

He had been the recipient of many Awards and Decorations such as 1939-45 Star, Burma Star, War Service Medal, India Service Medal, India Independence Medal-1947, Raksha Medal 1965 and GS Medal 1947 with Clasp ‘ NEFA’.

 

            Major Nelson married Salome Leela daughter of Mr.John Joseph the grandson of Rev.J.Joshua and Mrs.Sophia Joseph.  She had her education in the Mission Schools at NAGERCOIL.  They have five daughters - Vimala, Sheila, Subhala, Lily and Viola, and an only son Suresh. All the children are married and settled in life.

 

          However fate had its way and their sons-in-law Mr.Douglas Chandra Rajan husband of Subhala and Mr.Jaisingh Devasahayam husband of Lily died at a very early age of 40 years and 39 years respectively.

 

            After retirement from the Military Services Major Nelson kept himself engaged by establishing a business concern “Southern Enterprises” at NAGERCOIL dealing in all types of Tyres.

 

            Major Nelson and Mrs.Leela Nelson were regular for Church Services.  Mrs.Leela Nelson also took active participation in the Women’s Fellowship Meetings and other activities connected with the Church.

 

            Major Nelson passed away after a heart attack on 23rd May, 1998.  Mrs.Leela Nelson now lives in their own house at Marsden Street, NAGERCOIL.
