Bennett Albert spent the first sixteen years of his life in Rangoon,Burma,where his father Mr.R.B.Albert worked in the Chartered Bank ofIndia,AustraliaandChina. He was born on13th March,1918. He came to NAGERCOIL in 1934 with his mother,Mrs.Jane Albert, and younger brother, Spencer, the father remaining to work inRangoontill his retirement.

 

Bennett Albert completed the E.S.L.C. of the Travancore Government in the Scott Christian High School, and the Intermediate of the Madras University in the Scott Christian College, NAGERCOIL. 

           

In the year 1938 he joined the English Honours of the Madras Christian College, Tambaram.  He left the college forty years later in 1978 as retiring Principal.

 

            Bennett Albert married May Sarojini, the eldest daughter of Dr.G.M.Samuel of the Travancore / Kanyakumari Medical Mission, and Mrs.Annammal Samuel, the grand daughter of Rev.J.Joshua, on 12th September, 1946.  They have two children, a daughter and a son.  The daughter Sulochana, married Mr.S.L.Winston, now General Manager of Bombay Telephones and son of Mr.M.Sobitha Raj and the late Mrs.Sophia Sobitha Raj.

 

            The son is Premchandran Albert, Project Coordinator of CReNIEO, Madras, married to Nalatha, Librarian of the Institute of Management at Madras, and daughter of Dr.Christopher Das and Mrs.Suganthy Christopher Das.  The Alberts have three grandsons, Deepak and Anoop Winston, and Shalim John Albert.

 

            After retirement Bennett Albert served for some years as Honorary Professor of English in the Scott Christian College and the Hindu College, NAGERCOIL.  Since 1985 he has been Editor, M.C.C.Publications of Bangalore.

 

            Sarojini Albert, during her years in the College campus, was associated closely with the activities of the staff wives and women staff Fellowship, with the welfare of the Service Staff, and with social service in the villages around Tambaram.  Whenever necessary, she assisted in the Library and on the Student Guidance Centre, and was a regular Reader and Scribe in the Student Service for the Blind.

 

            Bennett Albert and Sarojini Albert are now settled in their own house at 337, Joshua Street, NAGERCOIL. phone 28787.
